Maryland Governor Larry Hogan announced starting Friday July 31st – masks will be required in all public areas and businesses where social distancing is not possible.

That includes outdoor spaces – and the governor says it will be up to local authorities to enforce the mandate.

The governor also announced that in response to an increase in hospitalizations in the state – the state is putting a pause on its Roadmap to Recovery. Governor Hogan says he’s concerned about reports of people and businesses not following safety guidelines.

The governor says he hopes the mask mandate will help to slow and eventually stop the spread of COVID-19 in Maryland. “This expansion of the masking order is an action that is both fact based, apolitical – and solidly grounded in science. While it can be an inconvenience in the heat, wearing masks is the single best mitigation strategy that we have,” said Governor Hogan.

The governor also announced that the Maryland Department of Health has issued a travel advisory. As part of that advisory – Marylanders are being asked to avoid travel to states with positivity rates higher than 10%.
