Maryland State Police say a Salisbury woman has died in a head-on collision after driving westbound in the eastbound lanes of U.S. Route 50 near Annapolis Wednesday afternoon.

Laura Ashley Murphy, 22, was pronounced dead at the scene, officials said. A 14-month-old infant passenger in the Volkswagen that Murphy was driving was medevaced to Johns Hopkins for treatment.

According to police, shortly before 1:30 PM troopers received reports of a vehicle traveling in the wrong direction on U.S. Route 50 at Maryland Route 2. Soon after, reports came in that a collision had happened.

Troopers arrived on scene approximately a quarter mile east of the Severn River bridge to find that a 2017 Volkswagen Tiguan collided head-on with a 2016 Mercedes SUV. Police say the driver of the Mercedes was also medevaced to Shock Trauma in Baltimore. That driver's name has not yet been released pending notification of next of kin.

A 2016 Nissan 350-Z was also struck in the crash, though the driver was uninjured, police said.

Investigators have not yet determined where Murphy entered the eastbound lanes of Route 50.

The eastbound lanes of Route 50 have been shut down for hours for an investigation. Officials say eastbound rush hour traffic is being diverted onto Maryland Route 450 and St. Margaret's Road. Westbound Route 50 is open to traffic.
